Session Notes: On "Rogue AI" and AI Existential Risks
Our first Community Conversation on AI on October 2, 2026 focused on reports of "rogue AI" in the news and researchers sharing fears AI poses an existential risk to humanity.
Here are some of the related interviews I've been watching and mentioned:
- Ex-Anthropic insider tells CNN how AI could kill all humans by 2030
- Ezra Klein on AI recursive self-improvement and loss of control
- We're Not Ready for Superintelligence
- AI Risk Debate
The takeaway wasn't an answer on whether there are risks, but an affirmation that we need spaces to talk. AI is showing up everywhere and on track to impact every aspect of our society. The people we care about are facing these headlines.
A simple question like "What are you hearing about AI these days?" can spark a conversation and communicate that we aren't facing this alone.
We only scratched the surface of this topic and will revisit related topics in the future.
Yesterday, I heard reports of hundreds of grocery stores in France being hacked. I immediately wondered, "Were these hacks powered by AI?" We don't know yet. But we do know AI is making hacking much, much easier.

In other news, the AI company Anthropic (creator of Claude AI) announced that within months, they think AI models might be able to replicate using internet-connected devices like Smart TVs. CBS News "AI Worm" coverage.

Are we going to need to have a convo on "What to do when there's an AI living in your TV?"
